Japan remained towards the bottom of the rankings, slipping one point to 41st place. Government policy became less supportive, down 11 points to 37th, while access to grant funding worsened 13 places to 36th. There was however one bright spot: the country ranked 9th for women in leadership roles in social enterprises, up 6 places from 2016.
“The ecosystem surrounding social entrepreneurs has evolved over the past years in many aspects. Women and young people are well represented in the sector, and more corporations are interested in working with mission-driven organizations given the gaining popularity of SDGs.”
