United States

The best countries to be a social entrepreneur 2019

2016 Rank: 01

Country summary

Having dropped 31 places from the top spot it held in 2016 to 32nd, the United States is no longer considered among the best places for business leaders seeking to do good. The rankings for supportive government policy, access to investment, selling to government, business and the public slumped, putting the brakes on momentum for social entrepreneurship. One bright spot was the involvement of younger people, where the country secured second place along with China, Germany and Russia.

Expert view

"For lots of liberals who are going to be associated with social entrepreneurship, the sense is that the sky is falling."

Richard Parker, Professor, Harvard Kennedy School of Government
